Air Cargo Lufthansa Cargo drops import handling charges Our Bureau Chennai, May 27 Lufthansa Cargo stopped levying import handling charges in India from May 24. The airline had brought in the levy from May 1 to defray growing handling costs, but has come to this decision following protests from its customers. “We acknowledge their (customers’) concerns regarding the additional charges,” Lufthansa said in a trade circular. The charges would be “put in abeyance” till such time a consensus is reached by all parties, the circular said. The Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry said Lufthansa Cargo used its dominance in the air cargo export and import business to introduce an ‘unjustified’ additional levy. Carrying the cargo under ‘Contract of Affreightment’ casts a responsibility on the carrier accepting the freight, at a foreign location to place the same at the disposal of the consignee on arrival in India. With a transport volume of 1.81 million tonnes of freight and mail, Lufthansa Cargo ranks among the world’s biggest cargo carriers. It operates a fleet of 19 of its own MD-11F aircraft and has several other freighters on charter to cover around 300 destinations, according to the company’s Web site.
