Agricultural Policy States - West Bengal Bengal to formulate balanced policy for farm, industry
Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Our Bureau Kolkata, May 27 The West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, said here the State would focus on formulating a balanced policy for coexistence of agriculture and industry. “The agricultural scenario is in a bad shape in India. Even though the growth rate is high, the benefits must also reach the poor. In West Bengal we are pursuing a balanced policy for agriculture, industry and services. “On the one hand we will consolidate agriculture and on the other hand promote industry as fast as possible,” Mr Bhattacharjee said while addressing the Bengal-Bavaria business summit here. The State Government will also work towards strengthening business ties with European countries in a bigger way, Mr Bhattacharjee said. Investment“We are an investment-friendly government and are also encouraging foreign direct investment in our State. We would like to help in the process of industrialisation to provide employment for the youth,” he said. Earlier, the State Industry Minister, Mr Nirupam Sen, had visited the State of Bavaria in Germany to explore business opportunities and the summit was a “follow up”, the Chief Minister said. “Bavaria and West Bengal have a common interest in areas like communication, automotive, IT and food processing. We would like to collaborate in these fields. Even though West Bengal is the largest producer of fruit and vegetables, we lack marketing and packaging skills. Collaboration with Bavaria in this regard will help in developing the agricultural economy in the State,” he said. The Economic Affairs Minister of Bavaria will visit West Bengal in October to explore such opportunities, he added. Meanwhile the State Industry Secretary, Mr Sabyasachi Sen, said on the sidelines of the programme that within a week, an administrator would be appointed to look into the daily running of the Calcutta Leather Complex. This was decided recently at the tripartite meeting between the State, the Calcutta Leather Complex Tannery Association, and Dalmia and Co. The State would also provide an exit route to Dalmia vis-À-vis the project, even though they would still be in charge of the 125-acre IT complex at the tannery, he added.
