Sport 18 ties up with Professional Golf Tour

Sravanthi Challapalli

Chennai, May 27 Sport 18, the sports division of Network18 which provides umbrella services including sponsorship sales, sponsorship servicing, marketing, consultancy and international representation, has tied up with Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) to promote and monetise professional golf in the country. Network 18’s English business channel CNBC-TV 18 will support this venture through broadcasts. Sport 18 has the exclusive broadcast rights for the PGTI events.

Mr Satish Menon, CEO, Sport 18, told Business Line there would be 20 golf events held every year. The first event since the tie-up will begin on June 1 this year. Sport 18 is charged with finding the tour/nomenclature sponsor. Once this is finalised, sponsors for the other aspects of the event will be fixed, Mr Menon said. Sport 18 is in talks with four potential sponsors. The sponsors would, typically, be drawn from premium product segments, such as high-end automobiles, he added.

Mr Menon said Sport 18 has picked up “high-end sports with niche audiences” as they would be a good fit with CNBC’s audience of “upscale executives”. It will market the Volvo Ocean Race India Stopover sailing event to be held later this year and the horse racing events of the Royal Western India Turf Club in both Mumbai and Pune. It has also won the rights to market marathons in some cities.

PGTI is a new entity floated by the Indian professional golf community with a focus on developing, nurturing and maintaining the sport.

It is headed by industrialist Gautam Thapar who is the President and comprises a governing board that includes top global pro golfers Jyoti Randhawa and Shiv Kapur.
