FACT moves first load of gypsum by rail

Our Bureau

Kochi, May 28 Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd (FACT) has commenced a large-scale movement of gypsum through railway wagons.

The first rake carrying gypsum was jointly flagged off from FACT’s Ambalamedu Division by the company’s Chairman, Dr George Sleeba, and Dr K. Sathyagopal, Chairman and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Cements.

The first consignment, consisting of 3,800 tonnes of gypsum loaded on to 59 railway wagons, was to be transported to the Ariyalur unit of Tamil Nadu Cements for cement production, a press release issued here has said.

It is for the first time that FACT is dispatching gypsum through railway wagons.

Till now the practice was to transport gypsum to the cement companies only through the roadway.

Given the energy efficiency of rail transport and ease of carrying bulk cargo, the new mode of transport is expected to facilitate greater bulk movement of gypsum with greater ease.

Eco-friendly method

All possible measures have been taken to avoid any dust problems during transport as all 59 wagons have been tightly covered with plastic sheets.

The transportation of gypsum by rail network will conform to all regulations and be carried out in an eco-friendly manner, FACT said.

The company is also taking steps to expand rail movement of gypsum to other cement companies in South India as well.

Gypsum plays an important role in the process of cement manufacture and is vital in controlling the rate of hardening of cement.
