Offerings at Coonoor tea sales continue to be high

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, May 28

For the third consecutive week, the volume offered for the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) has been tracing downward path.

For Sale No: 22 to be held on Thursday and Friday, a volume of 12.41 lakh kg has been catalogued. This is 35,000 kg lower than last week’s offer and 70,000 kg lower than a fortnight ago.

Still, the volume is high compared to several weeks. This time last year, only seven lakh kg were offered.

Fresh arrivals

Fresh arrivals are estimated at 10.99 lakh kg out of 12.41 lakh kg on offer now. The balance comprises remaining unsold teas in the previous auctions. So, fresh arrivals are more than the all-total offer of last year.

Arrivals are more because of the rains which have kindled growth in tea bushes. Planters said that May ‘rush’ crop has been higher in Nilgiris. Auctioneers said the offer would be 4-5 lakh kg more than last year for a few more weeks.

Of the 12.41 lakh kg on offer, as much as 8.49 lakh kg belong to the leaf and 3.92 lakh kg belong to the dust grades, 11.64 lakh kg belong to the CTC variety and only 0.77 lakh kg were orthodox teas.

The proportion of orthodox teas continues to be low in both the leaf and dust grades. In the leaf counter, only 0.32 lakh kg belong to orthodox while 8.17 lakh kg were CTCs.
