All set for e-trading in Ooty vegetables

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore, May 28 Nilgiris Horti-Tech Company Pvt Ltd (NIHTCO), a cluster-based consortium of small farmers in the Nilgiris district, is set to launch e-trading of Ooty vegetables on May 31, the inaugural day of the vegetable show.

The show is conducted by the Department of Horticulture at Kotagiri.

The vegetable consortium, according to NIHTCO CEO and Director, Mr H.N. Sivan, was mooted to help small farmers get a remunerative price for their produce. “The farmer can trade directly without depending on the middlemen to offload the produce, the system ensures transparency in trading and on-the-spot price discovery, involves minimum transport cost and immediate settlement,” he said.

NIHTCO has a membership of 50 farmers at present. It is planning to rope in another 500 by involving small farmers of five vegetable clusters in the Nilgiris comprising Nanjanad, Kadanad, Ketti, Thummanatti and Kotagiri. “These clusters produce around 5 lakh tonnes of Ooty potato, 3 lakh tones of carrot, 2 lakh tonnes of cabbage besides other exotic vegetables and fruits. The market value of these vegetables and fruits is estimated at over Rs 1,200 crore a year,” he told Business Line.
