Chaithanya Paints to double production capacity

Our Bureau

Kochi, May 29 The Kochi-based Chaithanya Paints (P) Ltd, an SSI paint company, is to double its production capacity from 4 lakh litres a year considering the growing demand for premium decorative paints in the market.

Mr L.R. Potti, Director, said at a press meet that the company has started a new division for decorative paints, especially for premium products like premium exterior emulsion, interior emulsion, distemper, exterior cement primer, ceiling white etc. Dukecem cement paint manufactured by the company in 1986 has been the frontrunner in the market for the last two decades, he claimed.

There are also plans to launch industrial and latest emulsion paints in the market shortly. He said that it had already started the production of industrial paints on a trial basis and commercial production would commence soon.

According to Mr Potti, the consumption of paints produced by the SSI sector is comparatively low in Kerala, which is below 20 per cent as against the all India average of 40 per cent. Of the Rs 1,000 crore market for paints in the State, SSI units only had a share of 15-20 per cent. The consumption of industrial paints is also low in the State compared to other States due to less number of industries.

The company, which has more than 30 products in its kitty, has also initiated steps to enhance the visibility of its products, especially for premium paints. At present, the products are marketed in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and have enquiries coming from Maharashtra, Mr K. Murugan, General Manager, said.
