Alliance to offer tech support to SMEs

Chennai, May 30

The Process Plant and Machinery Association of India (PPMAI), the apex body of $4-billion process plant machinery industry, is associating with Centre for promotion for Imports from developing countries (CBI) of The Netherlands to offer technical support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The collaboration is meant to raise the quality of SMEs in India and make them “export-ready by 2010”. The Chairman of PPMAI, Mr Shishir Joshipura told Bus iness Line, “We have received the draft agreement today and the official agreement will be signed within four weeks.” Though India is an acceptable sourcing destination for process plant machinery such as boilers and heat exchangers the impediment is quality of vendor base. More than 80 per cent of the industry is represented by SMEs, he said. The international customers would want to know the entire supply chain and therefore the quality of vendors’ processes was vital, he said. —
