For some time, the regulatory authorities, shipping lines, port authorities and terminal operators all over the world (except, perhaps, in India) have been voicing their concern over ship stack emissions in ports. Several options such as “cold ironing” (i.e. providing vessels with power from the shore when in ports), use of lower emission fuels and even hoods over ship’s stacks, etc., have been examined to counter the hazard. Meanwhile, the TT Club, the i nternational transport and logistics industry’s leading provider of insurance and related risk management services, has called for a cleaner working environment for crane drivers at ports. The call comes after the publication of a report on ship stack emissions by the Director of Global Risk Assessment of the club. The report examines how the emissions affect the quay crane drivers, despite their cabins being air-conditioned.
