Potential seen for international flights from Madurai

Madurai, June 1 After the completion of the ongoing work for the extension of runway to 7,500 ft, the Madurai Airport would be ready for operation of international flights and initially after the conversion, potential exists for the introduction of daily flights from the airport to Gulf destinations like Dubai, Kuwait and Abu dhabi, according to Mr.M.Suresh, Airport Controller, Madurai Airport.

The airport has received a total of Rs 500 crore for extension and modernisation works, including the construction of a new integrated terminal in an area of 17,650 sqm with five escalators, seven lifts and six aero bridges, costing Rs 150 crore. The terminal will also have an exclusive rest room for commercial VIPs, a facility not provided for in any other airport in the country, he said while addressing the executive committee meeting of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry here.

During the last one year, passenger traffic has increased from 15,000 to 30,000.

Speaking earlier, Mr S. Rethinavelu, Chamber President, pleaded for increasing the runway to 12,500 ft from 7,500 ft to enable landing and take-off of jumbo-sized cargo aircrafts.
