Pune, June 1 The Chamber of Marathwada Industries and Agriculture (CMIA) has taken up an initiative through its member units to upgrade 13 Industrial Training Institutes from rural Marathwada region.

According to Mr Ashish Garde, Secretary, CMIA, the Union Finance Minister had announced to provide financial support for the upgradation of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) through public-private-partnership (PPP).

In India, 1396 ITIs have been proposed to be upgraded into Centres of Excellence in specific trades and skills under PPP during the next five years.

In the first year, 300 ITI have been short-listed from all over the country to participate in this scheme out of which 62 are from Maharashtra.

CMIA member units would be associated with 13 ITI from rural Marathwada in the first phase.

An amount of Rs 32.50 crore would be invested for the upgradation of 13 ITIs from rural Marathwada region, while CMIA unit members would be acting as catalyst for implementing this scheme, he said.

Under the proposed scheme, the State Government, as the owner of the ITI, would regulate admission and fees while the new management would take care of the academic and financial autonomy and the Central Government would provide financial assistance by way of seed money, he said.

The Finance Minister has proposed to grant an interest-free loan of up to Rs 2.5 crore to each ITI for upgradation and revision of courses.

It is envisioned to upgrade at least 300 ITIs in the country every year beginning 2007-08 under the PPP mode, he said. For the upgradation of these shortlisted ITIs, , the ITI Managing Committee would be responsible for selecting staff and training and development.

Existing staff would undertake some form of skills upgrading, setting student entry requirements and for selecting students, developing and maintaining information systems, placement cells for graduates, upgrading curricula within national norms, including adopting new courses and introducing compulsory industry training for students, with employers assessing the practical skills of students as part of the overall assessment.

CMIA would also interact with the Confederation of Indian Industry for better implementation of this project, he added.
