The Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr B.S. Yeddyurappa, has directed the Dakshina Kannada district administration to gear up to control chikungunya disease in the district and to submit an action plan to tackle sea erosion during monsoon.

Discussing the problems of the district with the Deputy Commissioner, Mr M. Maheshwar Rao, and other senior officials through videoconferencing on Wednesday, Mr Yeddyurappa said that steps should be initiated on war footing to control the spread of the disease.

Mr Rao said that the district has been facing the problem of chikungunya since April 10. Chikungunya has spread in Sullia, Puttur, Bantwal and Belthangady taluks of the district. Till now, nearly 5,200 suspected cases of chikungunya have been reported. Of them, 25 cases are found positive.

Apart from the services of regular medical staff, medical colleges in the district have also been asked to send teams to tackle the disease. Arrangements have been made to provide medical facilities at the level of primary health centres in the district, Mr Rao said.

There could be a requirement of around Rs 15 lakh a taluk to take up activities such as treatment and fogging. Already 15 fogging machines have been pressed into service, he said.
