Our Bureau

Kolkata, June 4 New challenges facing dock safety came up for review at the Sixth All India Workshop on Dock Safety currently being held at Kolkata port under the aegis of Directorate General, Factory Advice Service & Labour Institutes, Mumbai, under the Union Ministry of Labour & Employment.

traffic rising

The challenges, it was revealed at the workshop, were surfacing due to increasing traffic in ports as well as globalisation.

New ships with advanced technology were emerging and, to handle them efficiently at the ports, new equipment and practices as also new sets of competent persons suitable for testing, examining and certifying the safe working conditions were needed.

Security code

The enforcement of International Ship & Port Facility Security code has brought into focus the new responsibility in the field of port security and safety.

Workshop

The two-day workshop inaugurated by Mr S.K. Saxena, Director General & Chief Inspector of Dock Safety, is also dealing with, among other things, new trends in non-destructive testing, calibration of various testing equipment and inspection of containers, according to Kolkata Port Trust sources.

Mr A. Majumdar, Deputy Chairman of Kolkata Dock System, Kolkata Port Trust, presided over the inaugural session.
