Software States - Tamil Nadu ‘No impact of US slowdown on State’s IT industry’

Our Bureau Chennai, June 4 In the next three years, at least 37-million sq ft of space will be available in the 37 approved information technology special economic zones (SEZ) in Tamil Nadu, according to State IT Secretary, Dr C Chandramouli. There has been no impact of the slowing down of the US economy on the IT industry in Tamil Nadu, he said, observing that last year, 3 million sq of IT space was added in the State. “This shows that the State is a major destination for the software industry,” he told newspersons. Tamil Nadu clocked a 38 per cent growth in software exports to Rs 28,490 crore during 2007-08. The units under Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) reported exports of Rs 25,702 crore; units under Madras Export Processing Zone Rs 1,210 crore and units under STPI (IT/IT-enabled SEZs) Rs 1,469 crore. 139 STP units approvedA total of 139 STP units were approved during the year. Around 72,000 new IT jobs were created in Tamil Nadu last fiscal, taking the total employment in the sector to around 2.75 lakh. Around 60 per cent of jobs were in the business process outsourcing and the rest in the pure software services, Ms R. Rajalakshmi, Director, STPI Chennai, said. Export of application software and system software increased by 72 per cent to Rs 21,293 crore and the ITeS sector witnessed a 19 per cent increase to Rs 4,965 crore.
