Book on China released

Chennai, June 4

In China, religion was replaced by the Communist Party, but now more than even communism, money making seems to be the new ideology, says Smoke and Mirrors: An Experience of China, a book written by Ms Pallavi Aiyar. The book, published by HarperCollins, was launched here today at a function organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry. Comparing the book with that of Tarun Khanna (Billions of Entrepreneurs: How China and India Are Res haping Their Futures, and Yours), Mr N. Ravi, Editor of The Hindu, who released the book, said the message that emerges from both are not different; that in China, the unprecedented economic success has gone hand-in-hand with the containment of freedom, but it has opened up opportunity for young people that was unimaginable in an earlier era. Smoke and Mirrors “is based on actual life experience and on the perception of a remarkable, inquisitive and sensitive mind”, he said. The book does not bring in a comparative approach (between China and India) at every stage, though the reference points in the book are predominantly, but not exclusively Indian. It encapsulates range of issues from China as the factory of the world to the conditions in Tibet, he added.
