Karnataka urged to focus on developing new industrial areas in Mysore

Our Bureau

Bangalore, June 4 The Confederation of Indian Industry has urged the Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr B.S. Yeddyurappa, to focus on developing new industrial areas in Mysore.

The Government should also focus on upgrading infrastructure at the existing industrial areas, while giving equal importance to providing transport link with a mass rapid transit system to cover the industrial clusters, railway station, airport and the inter-State bus terminus.

A delegation of CII, Karnataka, which greeted Mr Yeddyurappa on his being elected the Chief Minister, expressed confidence his Government would be focus on good governance with emphasis on transparency and bring about inclusive growth.

The delegation was led by Mr S. Viswanathan, Chairman, CII Karnataka & Managing Director, John Fowler (I) Pvt. Ltd and comprised Mr K.N. Shenoy, Past President, CII & Vice Chairman, Volvo India Pvt. Ltd, and other members.

The delegation hoped that the new Government would hasten some of the infrastructure projects in Mysore such as the Mysore Airport, doubling of railway track from Bangalore to Mysore and completion of the NICE (Bangalore-Mysore Expressway) infrastructure project.

Mr Viswanathan suggested that the new Government could emulate examples of Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal, which, through attractive tax incentives obtained from the Central Government, could attract large investments in backward areas.

In this context, he referred to CII’s vision document for 2025 prepared by Prof. Rishikesha T Krishnan of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.

The report highlights the growing demand for employment opportunities for the rural people, closer to their neighbourhood.

This would go a long way in correcting regional imbalance in addition to minimising the strain on the already groaning urban infrastructure.

The CII delegation also asked the Government to give importance to labour reforms, including allowing contract labour in non-core areas.
