`Fuel price hike will hit garment units'
Coimbatore, June 4
The Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) has
requested the Ministry of Finance to consider the
impact of the fuel price hike on the garment industry
while working out the duty drawback rates for the
current financial year. Mr A. Sakthivel, President, TEA, in
a statement, said the garment producing units, due to
unscheduled power cuts for 6-8 hours a day in Tirupur,
were forced to use their own diesel generators and the
hike in fuel price would lead to proportionate increase in
the cost of garment manufacture. The manufacturers
were not in a position to pass on the cost increase to
buyers as they had to remain competitive `to stay in the
global market'. He said the Ministry, which is now
working out the duty drawback rates for garments and
other products, should consider the increased fuel cost
while arriving at the duty drawback rates for 2008-09. -
