IPR Unctad to support ‘creative economies’
Our Bureau Hyderabad, June 4 Forecasting huge potential in ‘creative economy’ in India, Unctad (the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) has decided to protect the unique attributes, local traditions in the areas of interior designs, graphics, fashion accessories, jewellery, toys and architectural services. Addressing the inaugural on ‘IPR protection through Geographical Indications’, here on Tuesday, Ms Lakshmi Puri, Deputy Secretary-General (Acting) of the Geneva-based Unctad, said India exported creative goods worth $8.1 billion in 2005 and improved its global ranking from 16th in 1996 to 11th in 2005. Stating that China, India, Turkey, Thailand and Mexico were among the top 20 exporters of creative goods, she said the design component with $6.1 billion topped the list in India. “Despite the richness of cultural diversity and abundance of creative talent, many countries are not able to tap the potential of creative opportunities,” she said. She pointed out that Unctad was in the process of helping the communities in realising the creative potential in these countries. She, however, felt that economic benefits of geographical indications could be seen only through a good marketing strategy. She proposed a Government community-NGO based partnership model for geographical indications protection. Meanwhile, Unctad is promoting an electronic platform to facilitate a meeting place for stakeholders. The Indian Government has so far identified 96 potential handloom products for geographical indications registration. “We are currently working with 16 products including Banaras sarees, Lucknow chikan craft of Uttar Pradesh and Dharmavaram silk (Andhra Pradesh) for documentation,” Mr Abhijit Das, Deputy Project Coordinator of Unctad India, said.
