Workshop on ‘Madurai Malli’

Madurai, June 5

A Committee from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is working on securing a patent for Madurai Malli (the Tamil word for jasmine flower cultivated in the region) and register the same under Geographical Indicators Act to preserve its distinctiveness as a symbol of Tamil culture, said Mr S.S. Jawahar, District Collector, while addressing a workshop on ‘Madurai Malli’ held here. The workshop, organised by The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Herita ge (INTACH), Madurai Chapter, in association with DHAN Foundation and Thiagarajar College, is aimed at empowering the flower vendors to organise and market the product with greater value addition by teaching innovative methods and develop as a brand while improving the livelihood of all those connected with it, said Mr M.P.Vasimalai, Executive Director, DHAN Foundation. Around 125 women were imparted training in six specialities.
