Environment day with a difference

Kolkata, June 5 “Kolkata is after all livable only during a bandh,” – is how Mr K.K. Nevada, President, Bengal National Chamber of Commerce, described the city on the Environment Day, which happened to escape its daily dose of pollution during Thursday’s bandh.
“What a bandh like this does to the city is that it keeps its one million daily wage earners hungry,” and then, with a pause, he continued, “and of course, it makes sense to an environment day celebration.” Mr Nevada was speaking to Business Line here on the sidelines of a programme organised by the Science Association of Bengal on the topic of ‘Kick the habit-Towards a low carbon economy’.
The Mayor of Kolkata, Mr Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, and MP, Mr Md. Salim, however could not make it to the venue.
Almost 20,000 buses and 80,000 cars move on the roads of Kolkata every day emitting 3.5-4 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide and adding to sound pollution as well, Mr Sadhan Ghosh, Professor, Jadavpur University, said. On Thursday, of course, the roads were deserted.
“The maximum pollution in the city is recorded near the Dunlop Bridge where 277.34 milligram per cubic metre of suspended particulate matter is emitted every day while the standard is 200 mg,” said Dr P.K. Bose, Professor, Jadavpur University, who is currently doing research on the issue.
Among other things, the meeting discussed the environmental advantages of bio-diesel replacing more conventional fuels such as petrol and diesel.
