Boat operators’ plea on diesel price hike

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, June 5 The Visakha Dolphin Boat Operators’ Welfare Association has urged the Union Government to roll back the hike in diesel price as it will adversely affect the fisheries sector, which is already under great burden.

In a press release issued here on Thursday, Mr D.V.R. Raju, President of the association, and Mr Ch. Satyanarayana Murthy, General Secretary, said each boat owner would have to buy 5,000 litres per boat per month, and the hike would mean an additional expenditure of Rs 15,000.

Additional expenditure

“As there are 400 boats here, taking up fishing for ten months in a year, it will mean roughly Rs 6 crore of additional expenditure, which the industry is in no position to bear. The mechanized boat owner as well as the fishermen will be hit hard by the hike,” the release said.
