Ericsson finalising partners for towers

M. Ramesh

Chennai, June 5 According to Mr P. Balaji, Vice-President, Marketing & Strategy, Ericsson India, there is a good demand for the products from telecom operators — about 200 towers a month.

Tower tubes replace the conventional telecommunication sites with “a sleek architecturally-designed, aesthetically-pleasing tower. It can be regarded as a feature of any landscape,” says Ericsson’s Web site.

The Swedish telecom major is in the process of finalising partners who would manufacture the towers, Mr Balaji said. These towers will not replace the existing telecom towers that rise from rooftops of buildings, but only those that are ground-based. Tower tubes are concrete-built — they occupy less space (only about 5 sq. metres at the base) and are easy to maintain. The tower’s concrete exterior protects equipment from the elements and provides a stable internal environment. The radio base stations are enclosed within the tower.

Base stations

Ericsson also manufactures the base stations — equipment that sit on the towers and receive and send signals. Mr Balaji said the demand for the base stations is increasing. Ericsson’s factory in Jaipur usually produces between 4,000 and 5,000 base stations, but in May, it produced over 7,000.
