Indian students more aspirational, career focussed: Accenture

Our Bureau

Bangalore, June 5 Indian students are seen as more aspirational and career focussed than most of their counterparts across the globe. In a study by Accenture on ‘India Graduating College Seniors Concerned About Job Prospects,’ it was found that almost 65 per cent Indian students expressed the ambition to get into the C-suite (CXO) compared to 35 per cent globally. Among the most important benefits that Indian students seek from their employers are compensation/salary (82 per cent), interesting and challenging work (77 per cent), opportunity for global experience (63 per cent) and company brand name (59 per cent).

“Compare this to the global preference for health benefits, flexible work-life balance and social atmosphere and you realise that the Indian workforce is more career-focussed,” says Mr Deepak Malkani, Partner, Talent and Organisation Performance, Accenture India.

The study also says that the highest industry preference for employment in India points toward technology, consulting, banking and media, while in the developed countries, students want to explore job opportunities in education, media, entertainment, healthcare and the government sectors.

According to the study, fears of a weakening economy have led some students ready to adjust their job search criteria in a number of areas, including accepting a lower salary (36 per cent), broadening their search by industry or skill area (31 per cent), accepting the first job offer (25 per cent), looking for a job in a different country (25 per cent), looking for a job in a different city (24 per cent) and compromise on job requirements (24 per cent).

The survey was part of a global Accenture study of 2,464 students in eight countries including students from the US, the UK, France, Germany, Brazil, Russia, India and China.
