Nilgiris tea production rises 44% in May

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, June 6

Nilgiris tea production so far this year has increased over the corresponding period of 2007 due to the useful rains and the optimum sunshine received by the plantations.

According to the UPASI Tea Research Foundation, production in its member estates in Nilgiris in May increased by 43.6 per cent over May 2007. The production totalled 1.6 million kg against 1.12 mkg last year and the five-year average of 1.5 mkg.

The cumulative production from January to May was higher by 36 per cent over last year. Production in the five months totalled 6.89 mkg against 5.07 mkg last year and five-year average of 5.89 mkg.

The foundation has noted that although the rainfall received in May was less than the decennial average in all agro-climatic zones except Kotagiri, the rains were useful for tea cultivation. “Drought was not of any consequence”, it said.

The cumulative rainfall for Jan-May received by plantations in Coonoor agro-climatic zone was the highest in the district at 73.2 cm against 21.7 cm last year and 33 cm decennial average.

Kotagiri plantation recorded a rainfall of 70.3 cm (23.9 and 39.9 cm), Kundah 67.1 cm (23.5 cm and 25.2 cm), Colacombie 59 cm (21.1 and 29.6 cm) and Udhagamandalam 31.3 cm (26.5 and 22.9 cm).

Plantations are, however, reporting increased infestation of red spider mite. The UPASI Tea Research Foundation has issued a “warning note on red spider mites”.

Advice has also been issued on weeding as many estates report that weed control has gone out of their hands.
