Strategy States - Karnataka Bangalore jeweller to launch Tolkowsky diamond range

Our Bureau Bangalore, June 6 Bangalore-based jeweller C. Krishniah Chetty brings to India the renowned ‘Tolkowsky’. Known for its expertise and experience in diamond cutting, polishing and craftsmanship, the 200-year-old European diamond house has entered into an exclusive 50:50 partnership with C. Krishniah Chetty (CKC) to launch the CKC-Tolkowsky range of premium diamond jewellery. To start with, the range has six collections designed on international lines, priced at Rs 35,000 onwards. Going forward, Indian lines will also be introduced. This CKC-Tolkowsky range, targeted at the “educated, demanding, quality conscious consumer”, will be exclusively available at the CKC stores in Bangalore. Mr Jean Paul Tolkowsky, the seventh generation of the Tolkowsky family which has to its credit cutting the world’s largest diamonds, said, “This business partnership is the marriage of two families. Tolkowsky will bring special pieces of art for Indian clients.” The diamonds, which come from the Tolkowsky stable, will be cut and polished in Tolkowsky’s factories in Thailand and Botswana. Jewellery production will happen in Thailand and at CKC’s factories in Bangalore and Mumbai. CKC will be involved in design, marketing and production and will share costs. “Technical skills, manpower, know-how and design teams will be shared,” said Mr Vinod Hayagriva, Managing Director, C. Krishniah Chetty More storesMeanwhile, C. Krishniah Chetty, which has two stores in Bangalore, plans to go national. The jeweller is looking to have in place six showrooms in the country by 2012. Tolkowsky will be taken wherever CKC sets shop. C. Krishniah Chetty is also eyeing the overseas market to set up stores. Mr Hayagriva said, “We are looking at a qualitative growth and as we go along, will set up full-service stores which will customise to the customer’s needs.” C.
