Research & Development Symantec to expand research initiatives in India V. Rishi Kumar Hyderabad, June 6 Symantec Corporation is set to expand its research and development mandate out of India, with a focus on new generation products and customisation requirements for markets in the region. The Vice-President of India product Operations, Symantec Corporation, Mr Shantanu Ghosh, told Business Line that the company researchers are working on a host of new products from its development centres based in Pune and Chennai covering both enterprises and individual users. “We now have over 2,500 people working on a wide range of products and contributing significantly to intellectual property (IP) creation. Many of them may eventually lead to patents. As a part of this, we have set up a committee that will assist in patent filings,” he said. Acquisitions helpDuring a visit to Hyderabad, Mr Ghosh, who was part of Bindview and now heads research-and consultancy-related work for Symantec in India, said three of the companies which Symantec acquired over the years — IM Logic, Bindview and Veritas, have presence in India, helping it to further consolidate its operations. To this, Symantec added the Chennai operations. Both these development centres have helped create several products in India; new product development and more researchers continue to grow. “The major contributions are the Control Compliance Suite which helps banking and financial sector and also for Sarbanes Oxley (SOX). We are also working on areas of software as a service and information management services for enterprises,” he said CustomisationSignificantly, SOX has different flavours and all the customisation such as the one for Japan referred to as J-SOX is handled out of India labs. The other relates to Enterprise Vault, which enables companies to archive the large flow of information and retrieve them when necessary. Symantec solution helps track and retrieve necessary information, he said. For research-focussed development centres in India, the accent is not so much on number addition as in a services company. But new areas such as virtualisation, compliance and achieving are among focus areas, he said. More Stories on : Research & Development
