IT Training States - Kerala Kerala IT Mission plans skills enhancement training initiative Sankar Radhakrishnan Thiruvananthapuram, June 8 The youth in Kerala looking to acquire some of the skills needed to work in ‘knowledge industries’ can soon turn to YES@Kerala for some help. For later this year, the Kerala State Information Technology Mission intends to launch YES@Kerala, a skills enhancement training programme to reach out to around two lakh college students and graduates across the State. YES (youth employability skills) is a programme designed to help the youth acquire the communication, technical and behavioural skills required for jobs in sectors such as IT and ITES, Dr Ajay Kumar, Secretary-Information Technology, Government of Kerala told Business Line. The initiative, likely to be launched by September-October, has the immediate objective of training 2 lakh young people over the next two to three years, he explained. The training sessions will be held on campus for college students and off campus, in special training centres, for those who have already passed out of college. The plan, Dr Ajay Kumar explained, is to encourage colleges to make YES@Kerala a part of their regular curriculum. The off-campus component of YES@Kerala will, however, be a one-off initiative, he added. A student will have to pay Rs 3,000 for the 120-hour training programme, he said. However, the course will be offered at a substantial discount for people from socially backward sections of society. The IT Mission is also talking to banks about the possibility of offering education loans to students who want to do the programme, he pointed out. The curriculum for YES@Kerala has been prepared in consultation with the industry and has modules on communication, technical and behavioural skills. With the curriculum firmed up, the IT Mission is now preparing to select training agencies to implement the initiative, Dr Ajay Kumar said. The plan is to have at least one training centre at the block-level, wherever feasible, he added. More Stories on : IT Training | Kerala
