Pilot fatigue

The article “The flight into danger” (Business Line, June 6) has hit the nail well and truly on the head.

The lack of accountability is one of the most glaring features of our bureaucracy and the latest action of the DGCA, as decided by “the competent authority,” which has kept in abeyance well-constituted regulations on Flight and Duty Time Limit is a classic example.

Interaction between fatigue and performance of flight crew in relation to safety does not need elaboration. If stringent regulations affecting safety are going to be fiddled around with, God save the air passengers!

One hopes and prays the Minister of Civil Aviation will take immediate steps to rectify this and ensure that air passengers’ safety is not jeopardised.

G. Radhakrishnan (IAF- Retd) Thiruvananthapuram
