Mergers & Acquisitions
Priyanka Vyas New Delhi, June 9 Mahindra & Mahindra is looking at capitalising on the recent acquisition of the $12-million Italian two-wheeler design company Engines Engineering, made by its component arm Systech. Though the acquisition is by Systech, an M&M top official said that the company could use the engine technology in its current range of vehicles. “The engines made by Engines Engineering are in the range of 300-500 cc. The niche technology in these engines can be scaled up to be used even in cargo vehicles, pick-ups or a car,” said Dr Arun Jaura, Chief Technology Officer, Office of Innovation and Global Advanced Technologies at M&M. He explained that the engines made by the Italian company have lower emissions and are lighter in weight. This would make it possible for the company’s light cargo vehicles such as Alfa and utility products such as Scorpio and Bolero to meet the emission challenge and carry more load. On whether the company would even use the small engine to make a car that could compete with Nano, Dr Jaura denied any plans to enter the segment. Hybrid-CNG technologyOn new acquisitions that M&M was looking out for, he said that they could be in the area of alternate fuel technologies such as hybrid-CNG and advanced electronics. “We are in talks with companies based in the US and Europe that work in the area of hydrogen-CNG technology or those capable of making advanced chips used to enhance the electronics features in the cars,” he said. The company would be launching its multi-purpose utility vehicle Ingenio during the current year and a light commercial vehicle that would compete with Tata’s Ace sometime next year.
