Aquaculture Exports of frozen tuna loins begin Our Bureau Kochi, June 9 After years of sustained effort by the government, industry and the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), the tuna fishing industry has begun to gather momentum in India. Signaling this coming of age, SSF Ltd, pioneers in export of shrimps, has begun export of frozen tuna loins, belly and off-cut mince from Andhra Pradesh. The exports were undertaken through Visakhapatanam and commenced from March. The company has set up a modern processing facility at Visakhapatanam with all the necessary infrastructure for packing high quality sashmi grade tuna, chilled loin, frozen tuna belly, frozen tuna off-cut mince and blast frozen whole round tuna. SSF is the first processing unit from Andhra Pradesh to commence tuna exports, MPEDA pointed out. The MPEDA Chairman, Mr G. Mohan Kumar, and the Deputy Director, Mr Vijaya Kumar Yarangal, visited the facilities of SSF and appreciated the efforts of the management in tuna loin exports. Mr V. Padmanabhan, Managing Director of SSF, said t his company also had plans to process and export value-added products of tuna in the near future from Andaman and Nicobar. Already an associate company of SSF, operating out of Andaman and Nicobar is involved in providing infrastructure facilities to the fishing community of these islands. The company also has plans to extend its facilities to more fishermen of the islands in the immediate future, Mr Padmanabhan added. Hauling the fish from the waters, stunning, gutting and cleaning are all important steps for obtaining high value for tuna exports. The right appearance for the tuna in the market place is another important factor in getting a better price, MPEDA said while pointing out that in India there is not much expertise in onboard handling of the catch, which ultimately results in lower price realisation.
