Record income for Kerala from lotteries

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, June 9

The Kerala Lotteries Department has recorded the highest monthly income till date of Rs 45 crore in May 2008.

The department has attributed the increase in income to the launching of new lotteries, changes in the structure of prices and the computerisation of the working of the department.

The monthly income has been averaging Rs 37 crore since January this year and the increase has been substantial when compared with the performance in the previous years. The turnover in the first two months of 2007-08 was Rs 50 crore and this went up to Rs 80 crore in the first two months of the current year.

The department is targeting to achieve a turnover of Rs 500 crore in the current year by simplifying the ticket sales and price distribution procedures and efficient planning of its schemes. The State exchequer received Rs 334 crore from the lotteries in the previous year and this marked a 41 per cent increase from Rs 236 crore in 2006-07, according to Mr M. Sathyaraj, Lotteries Director In-charge.
