All-time high: Containers being handled in the container feeder line m.v. Tiger Stream at the New Mangalore port.

A.J. Vinayak

Mangalore, June 10

New Mangalore port, which has been witnessing a steady growth in container traffic, has handled the highest number of 1,186 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers in a single voyage.

Mr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman, New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), told Business Line that for the first time, New Mangalore Port has handled the parcel size of more than 1,100 TEUs in a single voyage.

The container feeder line of Bengal Tiger Lines, m.v. Tiger Stream, operating between Mangalore and Colombo, called at the port on June 6.

A record number of 1,186 TEUs of containers were handled in a single voyage from the above vessel, surpassing the previous record of 786 TEUs of containers handled from m.v. Tiger Power which called at the port on September 9, 2006.

Of the 1,186 TEUS, 484 TEUs are import containers with raw cashew cargo. The remaining 702 TEUs are of export containers stuffed with reefer, coffee, granite blocks, fish meal, cashew kernels and machinery.

The vessel, which directly called at the port from Colombo, sailed back after the operation at the port.

The container traffic at the port is witnessing a good growth during the current financial year. The port handled 5,556 TEUs of containers as on June 10 against 3,097 TEUs in the corresponding period of last year, recording a growth of 79.40 per cent.

Mr Tamilvanan attributed this to the pro-active marketing efforts made by the port and the infrastructure created for the smooth handling of containers.

During 2007-08, the port witnessed a growth of 24.12 per cent in container traffic. It handled 21,460 TEUs of containers in 2007-08 against 17,290 TEUs in the previous year.
