Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, June 10 The labour unrest at Hindalco Industries Ltd at Kalamassery, near Kochi, has been settled. At a meeting held in the Labour Commissioner’s office on Tuesday, it was decided to set up an additional press at the company’s smelter to increase the production at the extrusion plant. This will provide employment to those workers who have been laid off. The agreement envisages selection of 85 laid-off workers, of whom 68 will be employed in the extrusion plant and the balance 17 in the casting plant. And the casting plant will produce enough billets to manufacture at least 2,000 tonnes of extrusion per month. The existing workers in the casting plant and the support services will get an average wage increase of Rs 1,862 from June 1 this year. The 85 employees being newly selected will get the increased wages from the day they join the company and till then, they will get the prevailing wages, according to an official statement. Besides, all the 133 employees presently working in the casting plant and the support services will be given a lump-sum of Rs. 40,000 each. The casual workers numbering 10 in the casting plant and the support services will be absorbed permanently in the vacancies arising in the future.
