Nilgiris set for 30% growth in floriculture

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, June 10

Floriculture experts predicted a 30 per cent business growth in Nilgiris district this fiscal over 2006-07. Last fiscal’s growth was 20 per cent.

“There has been a mentionable increase in the area under greenhouse. In all, around 50 hectares are under floriculture in the district. Annually, some 560 lakh stems are being traded. Of them, around 70 per cent is carnation. A significant area of the balance is lilium, both Asiatic and oriental. Other major flowers include gerbera, bird of paradise, chrysanthemum and alstroemeria.

“More and more farmers are going in for floriculture. Accordingly, the suppliers of greenhouses, drip irrigation systems, planting materials and other inputs are busy booking orders in Nilgiris,” said Dr S. Ramu, Executive Director, Hill Queen Agri Tech, which organised Floriculture 2008 technical meet at Kotagiri today.

Nilgiris is graduating to win a sizeable share in the country’s Rs 10,000-crore floriculture business.

“The scope is bright in both domestic and export markets. Sixty per cent of the business is domestic which grows 20 per cent annually. The balance is export market which grows 25 per cent annually. But, growers have to be careful to choose the global quality greenhouses, drip irrigation system, planting materials, inputs and adopt Global Agricultural Practices,” Dr Ramu said. He introduced the telescopic galvanised modern technology greenhouse prepared by Sriroz Consultants, Pune, which is exporting the technology to a dozen countries.

Making a presentation on water management, Mr Amol Jadhav, Micro Irrigation Engineer, Plastro Plasson Industries (I) Ltd, underlined the need to go for improved cost-effective technology for drip and sprinkler irrigation to gain global competitiveness in floriculture trade.
