Central Training can conduct exams for pilots

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, June 10

The pilot training capabilities of the Central Training Establishment (CTE) here have got a shot in the arm with the institute getting recognition as a Type Rating Training Organisation (TRTO).

The TRTO status would mean that the CTE can conduct exams for pilots independently. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which conducts this examination, has given the approval to the CTE, according to Capt. C.J. Bhoopal, Executive Director (Training).

It will expedite the training process, which in turn would help airlines meet the big demand for qualified pilots to fly their growing fleets of aircraft in the near future, Capt. Bhoopal told Business Line.

The CTE, part of Air India, has completed the first type rating examination for 52 pilots on the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737-800 aircraft. While 44 pilots (39 new trainee pilots) went through the examination at the CTE here, the rest took the test in Mumbai, with the DGCA official overseeing it, he said.

Prior to the TRTO status to CTE, the pilots had to go to wherever the DGCA fixed to take the examination. Jet Airways has also reportedly obtained the TRTO approval, subsequent to the CTE.

For the present, the CTE will focus on training it own pilots, but soon, “we should be able to undertake the training of pilots from other airlines too”, Capt. Bhoopal, who is also the Chief Executive of the premier training centre, said.

The TRTO approval would also enable the CTE to conduct endorsement training, refresher/recurrent training.
