Foodgrains States - Tamil Nadu TN’s foodgrain production target fixed at 108 lakh tonnes Our Bureau Tiruchi, June 10 The State Agriculture Department has fixed a target for foodgrain production at 108 lakh tonnes for the current financial year 2008-09, the Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister, Mr Veerapandi S. Arumugam, has said. Declaring open the five-day expo cum seminar on ‘Agriculture and farmers’ development’ organised by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) at Pudukottai near here on Tuesday, Mr Arumugam said that during 2007-08, the State’s foodgrain production stood at 100.88 lakh tonnes. The upward revision was due to introduction of farm mechanisation techniques and the streamlining of the Agriculture, Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering departments in the State. The State Government would import a harvester for sugarcane from China. The harvester was specifically designed for the varieties and height of sugarcane being cultivated in Tamil Nadu.
