Minister seeks public help for better transport

Our Bureau

Kochi, June 10 The State Transport Minister, Mr Mathew T. Thomas, has sought the co-operation of the public for joint concerted efforts to improve the working and quality of service of the State-owned KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation).

He said that the feasibility of various suggestions placed before him would be examined and based on it suitable steps would be taken. He was speaking at a meeting organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry here.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chamber President, Mr R. Mohandas, pointed out that there is a long pending request to start a KSRTC sub-depot in West Kochi and introduce direct services between Mattancherry and Ernakulam via Willingdon Island.

He demanded extension of some of the shuttle services, which are now terminating at Thoppumpady to Mattanchery and Fort Cochin.

He also demanded that KSRTC ferry service schedules should be restructured so as to introduce direct services between Mattancherry and Ernakulam via Willingdon Island as well as between Fort Cochin Customs Jetty and Ernakulam.

The Minister pointed out that the speedy implementation of the suggestions would help to reduce the perpetual traffic congestion presently being experienced on the main and artery roads in the city.

The introduction of direct ferry services and a scientific fixation of the schedules will go a long way in providing a hassle-free travel experience to touristsin Fort Cochin and Mattancherry, besides a great relief to a large number of regular commuters, he said.
