AP exports 100 boxes of mangoes to Japan

Fruits undergo vapour heat treatment before shipment

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad, June 10

This week, a consignment of 100 boxes containing a few quintals of mangoes have been sent to Japan from Andhra Pradesh, opening up a new front for the farmers.

These fruits were treated by the two VHT (vapour heat treatment) plants set up in Chittoor and Nuziveedu (Krishna district) and ratified (phytosanitary tests) by two Japanese officials for export to the Far-Eastern country. Japan required importers to get the fruits treated by VHT plants.

Consumer feed back

“We need to get and analyse consumer feed back from that country with regard to taste and varietal preferences. Once we get the feed back, we will be able to send three to four more shipments,” a senior official of Apeda (Agricultural and Processed Foods Export Development Agency) told Business Line.

Japan was particular about knowing the origin of the imports. “A few importers have come here,” he said.

“After sending a few more samples and understanding the market there we can promote the product on a larger scale,” he said.

US campaign

The US too, offered a huge market. It already absorbed 10 tonnes of mangoes. “Another 15 tonnes could go this year,” he said.

The country had launched a promotional campaign in the US. While the Andhra Pradesh Government organised a mango show in New York, the APEDA held another in Los Angeles.

Irradiation facility

And one more is being planned in San Diego in the third week of this month.

As exports to the US needed irradiation treatment, the Apeda had begun efforts to facilitate an irradiation facility in Andhra Pradesh. It has asked for land from the State Government at Shamshabad, which is home to the new international airport. “It, however, will take some time,” he said.

Simultaneously, the district marketing society of Khammam too, had a plan to set up a facility in the district.
