Letters Tackling high oil prices Analysts the world over are predicting that oil prices could well touch $200, even $250 by end of 2009. We need to therefore radically change our thinking and ways of living and travelling. Some measures that might help are: Bring a uniform rate for CNG all over the country and make it abundantly available. Ensure that all school-children are transported only in CNG buses. Like IT firms, all big company employees should be transported by their employers only in CNG buses. Public transport systems should be integrated with Metros, like Delhi, and the MRTS in Chennai Have at least 8,000-10,000 buses running on CNG on the roads in Chennai, in various categories, including AC buses. The AC buses can also ply in large numbers to ensure they are used widely by two- and four-wheeler owners. Ban all 2 and 4 wheeler Vehicle in City areas between 8am and 8pm. Anyone wanting to use their personal vehicles will have to buy tokens of Rs 500 for a two-wheeler and Rs 1,000 for a four-wheeler, for a fixed time period. Police vehicles, ambulances, and government vehicles of senior officials may be exempted. Allow adequate number of CNG taxis, with proper metering, all over the cities, especially near airports, railway stations and bus stands. Autos should be made to operate in the suburbs only, like in Mumbai, and that too on CNG. A. Ramanathan Chennai More Stories on : Letters | Petroleum
