Tea Huge volume on offer at Coonoor tea auction P.S. Sundar Coonoor, June 11 Volume offered for the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association continues to remain high, with the catalogues for Sale No: 24 to be held on Thursday and Friday totalling 13.35 lakh kgs, the highest for any single auction in more than two years. This is 13,000 kg more than last week’s offer. It is as much as 3.95 lakh kg more than the offer this time last year. A total of 12.53 lakh kg, out of 13.35 lakh kg, is said to be fresh offer. The balance comprises teas remaining unsold in previous auctions. Production riseThe arrivals are more because of the increased production activated by favourable rains. According to UPASI Tea Research Foundation, production in its member estates in Nilgiris in May has increased 44 per cent over May 2007. January-May cumulative production has risen 36 per cent. Of the 13.35 lakh kg on offer, as much as 9.52 lakh kg belongs to leaf grades and 3.83 lakh kg to the dust grades. Again, as much as 12.53 lakh kg belongs to CTC variety and only 0.82 lakh kg, orthodox variety. The proportion of orthodox teas continues to be low in both the leaf and dust grades. In the leaf counter, only 0.35 lakh kg belongs to orthodox while 9.17 lakh kg to CTC. More Stories on : Tea
