Agri insurance in AP with village as unit

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, June 11

Andhra Pradesh has decided to introduce an agricultural insurance plan that takes the village as a unit unlike in the past where mandals were used to be units.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said each of the districts would have a main crop for the insurance coverage. “We appeal to the farmers to pay premium to get the coverage against natural disasters and crop losses due to other reasons,” he said.

“The scheme was not that useful for farmers when mandals were taken as units. The estimation of loss depended on the average impact on the whole mandal, giving little succour to the farmers in a particular village if that particular village was affected by natural calamities,” he said.

He cited the example of some farmers in Guntur and Krishna districts who could not get compensation because of their reluctance to join the insurance scheme last year.

Stating that the scheme would be helpful, he pointed out that farmers in Anantapur received a compensation of Rs 376 crore from insurance companies.

Dr Reddy said those who didn’t take any credit from institutional finance could also join the insurance scheme this year.
