SpiceJet expects loss of Rs 80-100 cr this year

Our Bureau

New Delhi, June 12 The low cost airline SpiceJet expects to report a loss of Rs 80-100 crore during the current year, up from a loss of Rs 70 crore reported during the previous year. It expects to achieve break-even in March 2010, a year later than what was expected before, a senior airline official said on Wednesday. The airline is looking at a number of measures to reduce losses, including curtailing the number of daily flights to 100 from the existing 117. “The move will primarily affect the short haul routes like Chennai-Bangalore, Hyderabad-Bangalore and Jaipur-Ahmedabad. This will help increase the load factors by 2-3 per cent the airline official said.

The airline has returned two Boeing 737 aircraft, the lease for which have expired, although the move will not lead to any reduction in the fleet strength of 18 aircraft.
