Our Bureau

New Delhi, June 12 Supported by several rounds of hikes in goods tariff during the last one year, the Railways registered a 26 per cent growth in freight earnings in May 2008 year-on-year. The higher earnings have also been supported by a relatively lower growth rate of nine per cent in freight loadings in the month. Railways registered goods earnings of Rs 4,679.81 crore in May, up 25.69 per cent from the same month last fiscal.

Railways has been able to register 26 per cent freight earnings growth despite nine per cent growth in loadings on account of various surcharges ranging from four per cent to 60 per cent on different commodity groups in the last one year.

According to an official release, during May, the revenue earning freight traffic carried by Railways was 69.95 million tonnes (mt), reflecting an increase of 9.4 per cent over the actual freight traffic of 63.94 mt carried during the same month last year.

Similarly, for the first two months of this fiscal, Railways carried 137.73 mt of revenue earning freight traffic. The freight carried shows a 10.2 per cent increase over the freight traffic of 124.98 million tonnes actually carried during the corresponding period last year, said a release.
