Jetlite may replace Jet Airways on ‘thinner’ routes

Our Bureau

Mumbai, June 12 Jetlite might replace its parent company Jet Airways on certain of the latter’s leisure destination routes. These routes could include Chennai-Portblair, and flights to and from the North-East.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an aviation summit here, Mr Maunu von Lueders, Chief Executive Officer of Jetlite, said such a decision had been taken keeping in view the fact that people like to travel economically when on holiday.

According to Mr Lueders, Jetlite plans to deploy its 50-seater CRJs on “thinner routes”, especially to the North-East. Currently, Jet Airways flies ATRs on North-East routes, which have a larger seating capacity.

On the question of whether this could be one of the measures to reduce capacity in order to cut costs, given that these routes do not have enough passenger loads, Mr Lueders said the airline would not be replacing all the ATRs of Jet. “The idea is to operate on these routes in an optimal manner. So it would be a mix of CRJs, ATRs and Boeings,” he said.

On the issue of flying overseas, he said Jetlite would be flying on a couple of Gulf routes in winter of 2008. Jetlite has already received permission from the Civil Aviation Ministry to fly to the Gulf region, but currently does not have any free aircraft to start operations, said Mr Lueders.
