Derivatives Markets Columns - On the hedge
Trading volume moved up once again above the Rs 50,000-crore mark to Rs 52,333.46 crore against Wednesday’s turnover of Rs 45,775.86 crore. Nifty June future, however, ended the day with a discount of about 22 points to close at 4517.3 against the spot close of 4539.35. It added about 3-lakh shares in open interest positions. Among the options, Nifty 4400 put was the most active. Nifty 4500 and 4600 calls were the other active counters among the options. The NSE Volatility index or India VIX declined marginally to 29.23 against 29.64. This bodes well for the market, as fall in the index generally indicates buying in call options. Stock futuresReliance Industries was the most active counter among the individual stock futures. Reliance Petroleum, DLF, Reliance Capital and Tata Steel were the other active counters. Among them, Reliance Petroleum June future saw sharp spurt in open interest positions. It added about 67-lakh shares and closed with a gain of 5 per cent at Rs 180.95 against the spot close of Rs 180.1. Ranbaxy June future, which shot into prominence in the last couple of days due to the merger announcements, however, shed 1.34-lakh shares in open interest positions. It closed at Rs 545.55 against the spot close of Rs 544.05. However, the drop was steep in the case of IFCI, whose open interest declined by 26.24-lakh shares (or 4.56 per cent). It ended the day with a drop of 5.63 per cent at Rs 59.55 against the spot price close of Rs 59.45. FII buyingForeign institutional investors turned net sellers to the tune of Rs 595 crore in the F&O segment on the NSE on Thursday. They (net) sold Rs 322.83 crore in index futures and Rs 390 crore on stock futures, while they remained net buyers in index options (Rs 111.38 crore) and stock options (Rs 6.79 crore).
