Reprieve for wood-based industries

Our Bureau

Kochi, June 15

The Kerala State Small Industries Association has welcomed the initiative of the Forest Minister in mitigating the miseries of the wood-based industries on account of the Supreme Court restrictions on setting up new wood-based industries in the State.

Following the curbs by the Supreme Court in 2002, new wood-based industries could not be set up in the country. The impact of the order was felt adversely in the State, as rubber wood, which is abundance in the State could not be processed and also restrictions to start new processing units.

The Forest Minister had took the initiative to set right this anomaly and the Department presented the State’s peculiar situation before the representatives of the Central Empowered Committee, who visited the State recently.

Following the initiative, it has been decided to grant NOC to 758 applicants out of the 1,000 odd applications received.
