Jupiter Bio ties up with GI Logics

M. Somaasekhar

Hyderabad, June 15

Jupiter Biosciences Ltd (JBL), the Hyderabad-based, peptide intermediates company, has entered into a tie-up with GI Logics Inc to develop and market a diagnostic for H. Pylori bacteria, which is responsible for peptic ulcers.

The US-based company will transfer its technology and marketing rights for the development of Diamox, the drug and the diagnostic strip detection kit to identify H. Pylori to JBL, under the agreement signed early June, 2008.

Organism

H. Pylori is the organism, which infects nearly 50 per cent of the world population and is the main cause for peptic ulcers, and a big rise in cancers of the stomach in populations, including India.

JBL has a letter of agreement to licence the diagnostic test and also another drug developed by GI Logics for the treatment of peptic ulcers caused by the organism. “In due course we will sign an exclusive licence as well”, said Mr Venkat R. Kalavakolanu, Chairman and Managing Director of JBL.

GI Logics is a spin off company from the University of California, Los Angeles, with its founder and Chief Scientific Officer, Dr George Sachs.

Cost-effective tool

GI Logics would provide training at JBL facilities for the development of these two products by the company. It would focus on the use of Diamox or similar compounds for tackling the bacteria and the development of a cost-effective diagnostic tool.

JBL has the necessary chemistry capabilities to develop and undertake testing of cost-effective candidates and diagnostics. Hence, the agreement would be beneficial in the short term, Mr Venkat Kalavakolanu told Business Line.

JBL is focussed on research in peptide and chiral intermediates, which potentially offer scope for development of a range of diagnostics, therapeutics to vaccines. It has facilities in Hyderabad, Bidar and in Maryland of the US, he added.
