Water released from Grand Anicut for Kuruvai cultivation

Water was released from Grand Anicut in Thanjavur district for Kuruvai cultivation in the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam on Monday.

Water gushed out of the sluices of Cauvery, Vennar and Grand Anicut canal systems after the shutters were lifted. Paddy seeds were sprinkled on water to mark the beginning of the Kuruvai season.

The Union Minister of State for Finance, Mr S.S. Palani Manickam, State Ministers Mr K.N. Nehru, Mr N. Selvaraj and Mr U. Mathivanan; and Mr L. Ganesan, MP; District Collectors Mr C. Vijayaj Kumar (Thanjavur), Mr M. Chandrasekaran (Tiruvarur), Mr M. Jayaraman (Nagapattinam) and Mr T. Soundiah (Tiruchi); Mr M. Moorthy, Superintending Engineer of Public Works Department, participated in the function.

Later, Mr Palani Manickam told presspersons that 4,000 cusecs each is released from Grand Anicut into Cauvery and Vennar systems. One thousand five hundred cusecs is released into the Grand Anicut canal system and 500 cusecs into Kollidam, at present. This will be raised to 5,000 cusecs each in Cauvery and Vennar, 2,000 cusecs into Grand Anicut canal and 1,000 cusecs into Kollidam when once the full quantum of 15,000 cusecs drawn from Mettur dam reaches Grand Anicut.

The Minister said that it has been planned to raise Kuruvai on 1,11,000 hectares in the three districts – that is, 40,000 hectares in Thanjavur district, 36,000 in Tiruvarur district and 35,000 in Nagapattinam district.

It has been planned to raise samba on 1,18,500 hectares in Thanjavur district; 1,08,817 hectares in Tiruvarur district and 1,02,000 hectares in Nagapattinam district.

Mr Mohana Krishnan, Chairman, Cauvery Technical Committee, and Mr S. Ranganathan, Secretary, Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association, also participated in the function.
