Over-time work: Tirupur exporters ask Labour Dept to drop action

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore, June 16 Tirupur Exporters’ Association (TEA) has asked the Tamil Nadu Labour Department to drop penal action against garment units for engaging workmen in overtime.

Voicing concern over the recent action initiated by the labour department against managements of some garment units in this regard, the TEA has said that the industry has been for long providing overtime to their workmen and the normal practice is to offer one hour extra work with additional wages, over and above the stipulated eight-hour shift.

Since most of the workers employed by the Tirupur industry are migratory workers from other parts of the State, they too, prefer to work more hours and earn extra wages. These workers, in fact, shun units that stick to eight-hour shift and instead, prefer to work in units that offer overtime, the TEA has said in a representation addressed to the State Labour Minister, Mr T.M. Anbarasan.

Garment export business is seasonal and the units have to adhere to shipment schedule. These garment units are, therefore, ill-afford to keep more workers when they have their business at a low. Hence, the Tirupur units have adopted the system of over-time in employment, the TEA communication maintained.

The executive committee of the TEA has called upon the State Labour Minister to advise the department officials to drop the penal action against the exporting units which are already hit by the rising rupee and shortage of work force.
