Rural BPOs

The rural BPO initiative, Fostering Technologies in Rural Areas, and the Krishnagiri district administration are to be congratulated for their pioneering work in starting a Business Process Outsourcing outfit in an economically backward district like Krishnagiri (Business Line, June 16).

Success in such initiatives can relieve the unemployment and underemployment pressures that are increasing in the rural and semi-urban areas. It can also stop large-scale migration to urban and metro cities.

As the rental, transport costs and the wages are relatively lower in the semi-urban areas, the profitability of the BPO enterprises can also improve substantially.

In the context of the necessity to stop migration to the urban and metro areas, the Government must encourage such initiatives by providing adequate infrastructure support and tax incentives.
